Angela Wai Nok Hui is a percussionist and performer dedicated to researching and promoting new music. Angela searches for the unexplored possibilities between classical music, musical theatre and art, and collaborates with composers, artists, poets and painters, incorporating a multitude of instruments and styles.
Angela Wai Nok Hui has graduated from the Royal College of Music in BMus(Hons) and with distinction in Master of Music in performance. Angela was awarded the Joy Hockings Percussion Prize 2016. She was one of the percussion finalist in the BBC Young Musician of the Year 2010. She had performed with the BBC Symphony Orchestra through the Pathway Scheme. She was also enrolled to the sit-in scheme of the Philharmonia Orchestra. Angela is honoured to have performed under the baton of Bernard Haitink. When Angela is not performing or practicing, she dedicates herself to promoting music education. She has worked with the Creative Futures and the RCM Sparks by leading workshops, and with the BBC Symphony Family Orchestra.
Angela had appeared in the Chamber Music Academy Festival in Amsterdam 2015, where she performed with percussion soloist Nebojsa Jovan Zivkovic and Theodor Milkov. Angela has been touring the UK with soloist Michael Burritt as chamber musician and member of the RCM flagship percussion quartet. She has performed with Aleksey Igudesman and Lucy Landymore in a collaboration percussion concert. She has also performed Steve Reich’s ‘Double Sextet’ and ‘Quartet’ under the guidance of Steve Reich during his residency at the RCM. She appeared as a soloist in Asia, in 2016 Angela Asia premiered Avner Dorman’s percussion double concerto ‘Spices, Perfumes, Toxins!’ with Hong Kong Young Musicians' Wind Orchestra. In 2018 she has also appeared in the soloist series of the Taipei Chinese Orchestra in Hsin Fang’s percussion recital as a guest artist.
In 2018 summer, Angela and Yi- Ling's creation, ManiMani has held a 3-days residency at the Hundred Years Gallery; for the same project they have been invited to headline at the Sonorities Festival of Contemporary Music 2018 Belfast. Angela is a member of the Metapraxis Ensemble, they focus on the theatrical approach for new music and experimental music. They have performed in Café Oto, the Blue Elephant Theatre, IKLECTIC and they are invited to be part of the Voila Europe Theatre Festival this year. She has played with Abstruckt Ensemble, the Octandre Ensemble, Explore Ensemble and Plus-Minus Ensemble around the UK.
She has participated in editions of Sonorities Festival of Contemporary Music, the percussion studio at Darmstadt Ferienkurse für Neue Musik 2018, Linea Ensemble Summer Academy for contemporary music 2018, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival 2018/19, Impuls the international ensemble and composers academy for Contemporary music in Graz 2019 and Warsaw Autumn Festival in Warsaw 2019.
